National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) was incorporated on 7th January
1981 as a wholly owned Government Company to exploit a part of the large deposits of
bauxite discovered in the East Coast. Aluminium Pechiney of France, a world leader in the
field, provided the technology and basic engineering for bauxite mining, alumina refinery
and smelter. The systems support for the complex includes a coal mine and handling plant
set up by the Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. NALCO has adopted modern technologies in all
production units leading to optimal consumption of energy. NALCO, Asia's largest
integrated aluminium complex, consists of 2,400,000 tpa Bauxite Mines at Panchpatmali in
Koraput district of Orissa, 800,000 tpa Aluminium Refinery at Damanjodi in Koraput
district of Orissa, 230,000 tpa Aluminium Smelter at Angul in Orissa, 720 MW Thermal Power
Plant at Angul in Orissa, Port facilities at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to handle
import of caustic soda and export of alumina in bulk.
