The Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) was set up on 21.10.1972 to undertake detailed systematic mineral exploration and allied works in order to establish reserves of various minerals/ ores in the shortest possible time so that the large time gap entailed between the discovery of a prospect and its eventual exploitation could be curtailed. MECL is the premier exploration agency in the country. It carries out exploration activities under two major heads (a) Promotional, on behalf of Government of India, in which the projects are funded by Central Government on the basis of detailed exploration schemes formulated by the Company, in the perspective of demand vs. availability as well as national priorities and (b) Contractual, on behalf of other agencies including Public Sector, Private Sector and State Government. The company is also diversifying into commercial mining of selected minerals and coal sampling.
